Curator's Statement:
Living and working between Tampa, Florida and Brooklyn, New York, Elisabeth Condon's existence between these two disparate environments draws her attention to time, place, and memory. Her paintings, conglomerations of images from Seussland and Chinese Yuan Dynasty landscape paintings, play with imaginary landscapes remembered from childhood and landscapes that were recorded seven hundred years ago.
Reflecting on the experience of shifting between discordant atmospheres and exploding with bright, solid forms before swirling slowly off into the distance, parallels are drawn between spaces. Questions are asked about the difference in imagination and reality. Tangible perceptions are contrasted with hazy subconscious meanderings of the mind. Using the canvas to record and recall memories while simultaneously exploring new possibilities (and impossibilities) of reality. Her work is everything she has ever experienced and everything she has ever dreamed of experiencing.
Elisabeth Condon has traveled to Asia in the past to view Song and Yuan Dynasty scrolls and practice traditional Chinese painting techniques. We are pleased to invite her back to Beijing for her first solo exhibition in China, where she will be showing works created on this trip to China.
